Summary Statement

A Groundskeeper II is responsible for leading groundskeeping shift work to maintain aesthetically pleasing State grounds including performing a variety of groundskeeping and routine maintenance work.

Nature and Scope

An employee receives minimal supervision from a technical or administrative supervisor; the supervisor defines objectives, priorities, and deadlines and assists the employee with unusual situations.  Work of the Groundskeeper II is distinguished from a Groundskeeper I by having responsibility to lead groundskeeping shift work by assigning, monitoring, and reviewing work and providing on-the-job training, guidance, and direction. Groundskeeping work may include but is not limited to maintaining site landscaping, routine lawn, flower, shrub, and tree care and spreading mulch.  An employee inspects the grounds regularly for potential hazards or signs of damage and performs seasonal activities such as snow or ice removal and leaf raking. Work also includes picking up and removing litter or debris, furniture, and other items; repairing and painting benches and tables; maintaining driveways and parking lots; grading and repairing potholes; and assisting trades personnel as assigned.  Significant aspects of work includes operating and maintaining a variety of equipment and hand tools; moving furniture and other items; assisting trade personnel and performing a limited amount of maintenance work as required.  Other aspects of work in this class may include working with clients and/or inmates assigned to groundskeeping activity.

  • Leads groundskeeping shift work by assigning, monitoring, and reviewing work and providing on-the-job training, guidance, and direction. 

  • Maintains and cultivates lawn, flowers, shrubs, and trees involving planting, fertilizing, transplanting, irrigating, weeding, mulching, pruning, mowing, edging, and trimming. 

  • Applies pesticides and herbicides safely and responsibly when needed in accordance with all relevant health and safety regulations and standards. 

  • Oversees and performs seasonal care such as planting in the spring or leaf removal in the fall. 

  • Maintains driveways, steps and walkways by removing snow or ice, trash and debris, and may assist in grading and repair.  

  • Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and hand tools including mowers, tractors, saws, sprayers, blowers, edgers, grass shears, and trimmers. 

  • Paints and repairs tables, benches, and signs and assists trades and maintenance personnel in painting, minor carpentry, plumbing, and repairs as needed. 

  • Collaborates with maintenance team members on larger projects. 

  • Assists in the preparation and cleanup for outdoor events. 

  • Communicates and interacts effectively with people across cultures, ranges of ability, genders, ethnicities, ages, and races. 

  • Performs other related duties as required. 

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Groundskeeper II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: 

  1. Six months experience with the operation and basic maintenance of motor vehicles, landscaping or groundskeeping equipment, hand tools and supplies. 
  2. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
