A class incumbent conducts environmental health inspections in a facility, industrial plant or government agency to determine, eliminate and control occupational health hazards and diseases in compliance with federal/state health standards and regulations, Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and EPA guidelines.
Nature and Scope
An incumbent reports to an administrative supervisor and performs technical work of a comprehensive nature involving data collection and research analysis used to determine and implement control measures. Work includes collecting samples of dust, gas, vapors and other potential toxic materials for analysis; investigating the adequacy of ventilation, equipment, material sand other conditions which may affect employees, health, comfort or efficiency. In addition, an incumbent conducts plant or area surveys to determine safety limits of exposure to materials or conditions such as temperatures, noise, dust fumes, vapors, mists, gases, solvents, and radiation which are known or suspected of being real or potential detriments to health. An incumbent collaborates with other technical professionals to institute control and remedial measures; provides technical guidance to management labor organizations, governmental agencies and civic groups regarding health related problems as well as participating in educational meetings to instruct employees in matters pertaining to occupational health and prevention of accidents.

Conducts complete industrial hygiene surveys and/or on site inspections of asbestos abatement; health risk assessments in occupational and/or residential settings to ensure compliance with occupational health standards and regulations and/or epidemiological.
Investigations/surveys to determine occurrence of disease or injury.
Assesses health hazards by interpreting data, evaluating information, projecting long and short term objectives and evaluating effectiveness of control measures.
Coordinates with engineering firms plans and specifications for programs (e.g., asbestos abatement).
Approves plans and specifications and provides consultation services to outside agencies on matters of occupational health and safety.
Enforces Occupational Health Standard procedures for right-to-know and indoor Air Quality Programs.
May be required to present expert testimony in court cases and other administrative proceedings regarding matters pertaining to industrial hygiene.
Manages compliance with Delaware's Hazardous Chemical Information Act (Right-to-Know).
Prepares and submits draft regulations, standards and procedures assessing healthful conduct of work to administrative supervisor; reports and technical references and sources of information.
Speaks before interest groups, departments, schools and other interested parties upon request regarding occupational health standards and hazards.

Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Industrial Hygienist/Environmental Health Specialist
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Occupational Safety, Hygiene Management or related field.
Six months experience in conducting health and safety inspections to identify hazards or deficiencies.
Six months experience in collecting samples of dust, gases, vapors, contaminants, carcinogens, air borne blood pathogens, temperature, noise or other potential toxic materials.
Six months experience in using tools and test equipment to conduct occupational safety inspections such as air pressure tester, voltage tester, sound level meters, combustible gas indicator, smoke tubes, or explosive meters.
Six months experience in ensuring compliance with occupational safety and health laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
Six months experience in narrative report writing.
