Summary Statement

This is therapeutic work in support of treatment plans developed by professional staff. Work typically includes one-on-one/group treatment for clients/patients/residents experiencing acute or chronic disabilities including one or multiple physical, mental, developmental disorders.

Nature and Scope

This is full performance therapeutic support work. Work is performed under the supervision of a professional superior and includes basic therapeutic methods involving active treatment processes. A class incumbent guides/instructs clients/patients/residents, individually or in a group, through the processes necessary to attain the individual skills of  daily living, including personal hygiene, adult social skills, employment, and safety. Significant to this work is the ability to motivate client participation in the training programs/modification of inappropriate behaviors.  Work is reviewed in process.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as team leader mentoring less experienced staff and leading therapeutic groups.
     
  • Implements treatment plans through individual/group therapeutic sessions. Chooses activities/topics and leads group sessions.
     
  • Updates written record of therapeutic sessions noting progress/problems/possible solutions.
     
  • Intervenes in crisis situations, using appropriate therapeutic techniques.
     
  • Observes/records/reports any unusual behavior/significant behavior changes.
     
  • Observes/supervises clients/patients/residents ensuring appropriate location/safety/security.
     
  • Plans, conducts/participates in individual/group social activities, on and off campus.
     
  • May work with public/private sector to define/establish employment opportunities for client/patient/resident. Guides/teaches client/patient/resident regarding employment behavior.
     
  • Participates in inter-disciplinary team meetings to provide input on client needs, strengths, and weakness and discuss client/patient/resident progress to assist the team's development of client's individual program plan.
     
  • Performs preventive maintenance and general cleaning of training materials, work areas, and equipment such as equipment such as/not limited to beds/bed rails/wheelchairs/splints/braces/adaptive mealtime equipment/various assistive technology devices.
     
  • May drive/ride van to transport/accompany client/patient/resident to and from the facility or around grounds.
     
  • May monitor vital signs as directed by professional staff.

  • Knowledge of principals/practices of team leadership.
  • Knowledge of facility standards and procedures for client/patient/resident care. 
  • Knowledge of facility safety/security policies/practices/procedures.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance for various assistive equipment.
  • Knowledge of behavioral aspects of acute or chronic disabilities including one or multiple physical, mental, developmental disorders.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic approaches applicable to treating individuals experiencing acute or chronic disabilities including one or multiple physical, mental, developmental disorders.
  • Knowledge of procedures for taking/recording temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration.
  • Knowledge of basic hygiene/infection control/first aide.
  • Knowledge of job coaching, job modification, and crisis intervention techniques
  • Ability to recognize, record/report physical or behavioral changes.
  • Ability to distinguish/respond appropriately to inappropriate behavior.
  • Ability to follow oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to keep simple records/prepare basic reports.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of instructing and assisting clients in developing functional, social, recreational and vocational skills.
  2. Knowledge of working with persons with disabilities.
  3. Knowledge of applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  4. Knowledge of narrative report writing.
