An incumbent in this class inspects, assures compliance and recommends enforcement activities for highly technical radiation facilities operated under federal and state mandated regulatory programs.
Nature and Scope
An incumbent works under general supervision of a technical superior. An incumbent in this class performs advanced level tests and inspections to insure the control of the level of radiation emitted from complex radiation producing equipment and materials in medical and industrial facilities. A significant aspect of the work involves conducting standard and specialized radiological testing procedures; analyzing and interpreting findings of inspections, surveys, studies and presenting recommendations to supervisors the medical and scientific professions and other public health and regulatory agencies; educating and instructing facilities on regulatory requirements and procedures.
Essential Functions
Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.
Analyze, inspect and monitor state and federally contracted radiation facilities, equipment and procedures.
Enforces regulations and makes determination of compliance, makes recommendation to manager.
Instructs and educates staff at facilities on regulatory compliance issues and appropriate safety measures.
Conducts special investigations, and prepares reports of activities.
Participates as a member in Radiological Emergency Response drills and events.
Administers the Office of Radiation Control Dosimetry Program.
Reviews facility plans for appropriate shielding requirements, equipment layout and operation, and makes recommendation with respect to compliance.
Meets with representatives of health and industrial facilities, other government agencies, and the public to discuss radiation use and control.
Trains and provides technical guidance to others in inspection methods and techniques, and in the operation of testing equipment.
Establishes and maintains a registration database that will identify and track the location and use of radiation producing equipment and materials.
Assists with the development, review, and revision of regulations for the Delaware Radiation Control Authority.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The intent of the listed knowledge, skills and abilities is to give a general indication of the core requirements for all positions in the class series; therefore, the KSA’s listed are not exhaustive or necessarily inclusive of the requirements of every position in the class.

Knowledge of the theories, principles, and applications of nuclear physics and radiobiology as related to radiation protection.
Skill and program analysis, problem identification and resolution.
Ability to evaluate the significance of various kinds and degrees of radiation exposure in relation to established radiation standards.
Ability to analyze and interpret findings of inspections, surveys and studies, to present conclusions and make recommendations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to perform necessary physical activities required of position (e.g., ascend/descent stairs, move and manipulate in crowded spaces, and negotiate around, behind, above large pieces of equipment).
