A class incumbent administers, manages and directs a comprehensive psychiatric social services at a large institution for the mentally ill.
Supervises 13-16 professional and 3-5 clerical employees.
Nature and Scope
An incumbent reports to an administrative superior and is responsible for planning, organizing and managing an institutional psychiatric social work program. The incumbent supervises and provides consultation to staff and various treatment teams regarding discharges and aftercare plans. The incumbent works with personnel from community service agencies to coordinate and insure maximum usage and utilization of available community resources. The class incumbent chairs or participates on various institutional committees regarding Medicare and Medicaid Surveys and accreditation planning activities. In addition, the incumbent participates in the processing of interstate transfers of patients into and out of the facility. The incumbent is responsible for reviewing and investigating complaints regarding patient care and treatment.

Directs and manages the social service department of a psychiatric facility.
Plans, assigns and directs the work of social services staff.
Studies operations and directives, makes recommendations for and implements new or revised programs, policies and procedures.
Provides consultative services to treatment teams and community organizations.
Implements student training programs and in-service training programs.
Participates in interdisciplinary team conferences to discuss services, diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Psychiatric Social Service Director II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Possession of a Masters degree or higher in Social Work.
Three years experience in health or human services work such as applying theories, principles, laws and practices of health or human services programs and services that assist with and improve life for individuals, families, or communities such as financial support, employment, unemployment, housing, health care, disease prevention, substance abuse, child protective services, physical/mental health treatment and prevention or rehabilitation.
Six months experience in health or human services program administration such as overseeing and directing the development, implementation and evaluation of health or human services programs and services; planning and establishing short and long range program goals and objectives. Providing advice to other agency organizational units through consultation.
Six months experience in developing policies and procedures.
Six months experience in staff supervision which includes planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.
Knowledge of budget management and control which includes managing a budget for the purpose of keeping expenditures within the limitations of available appropriations and available revenue and maintaining, monitoring, projecting and controlling a budget within set policies and procedures.
