This class is responsible for creating artwork used in museum exhibits and support material and supporting the Curator in other aspects of exhibit design, research and fabrication.
Nature and Scope
The class incumbent reports to the Curator and is responsible for providing support in the design and production of exhibits and support materials. The incumbent confers with the Curator regarding budget, theme, historical information and related factors, studies information to obtain perspective and submits sketches, samples, scale drawings, etc. for approval or desired changes. The incumbent creates and designs artwork which includes original paintings and murals, illustrations, and graphics. Principle contacts are with State Museum staff, library and Archives staff, private museums and collections, vendors and contractual printers.

Creates exhibit artwork and support materials such as posters, flyers, brochures and signs; designs art and copy layouts; draws or paints illustrations; creates original paintings, murals and maps.
Assists in exhibit fabrication, installation, movement and dismantling including designing, arranging, painting or sketching backgrounds, fixtures and other materials, matting and framing documents, obtaining materials and supplies, etc.
Assists in exhibit design by providing ideas on plans and arrangement of layout, drawing or building scale models, preparing renderings and illustration.
Researches various subjects for exhibits such as design, layout of exhibit space, objects to borrow, assembling of 18th century clothing etc. using research check list and summary formats provided by superiors.
Conducts oral interviews with individuals to obtain information, documents and objects that are related to exhibits.
Write and/or edit exhibits labels as required.
Provides technical assistance to other State agencies and historical groups on exhibit materials and techniques.

Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Exhibit Art Specialist Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Six months experience in graphics and printing work such as planning, designing, creating or producing artistic visual materials, utilizing various techniques and equipment for the development of informational/educational media such as publications, exhibits, outdoor signage, displays and brochures.
Six months experience in using graphics and printing equipment such as digital or off set printers, graphic design equipment, finishing equipment, sign production equipment and machinery.
