This is technical work in the daily operation of a library.
Nature and Scope
Class incumbents typically staff the circulation, direct patron loan, bookmobile or inter-library loan service functions provided as part of the State library service. Class incumbents may also support an administrative superior in the development and carrying out of evolving Library Development products and programs. Incumbents receive general supervision from an administrative superior but function independently in the day-to-day operation of the service.
Essential Functions
Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Manages bibliographic records and databases for assigned collections, adding and deleting holdings information, patron information, and annotating and assigning subject headings.
Maintains assigned collection by recommending acquisition and processing new books and other library materials; weeding collection and reshelving books and other library materials.
Processes library material and prepares it for distribution.
Assists patrons in selection of library materials by determining user interest and recommending material available either at the library or at other libraries.
Searches and locates library and information resources using computerized and networked integrated library systems.
Assists patrons with questions and receives and fills inter-library loan requests from other libraries throughout the State and from other states.
Prepares printed catalogues of available material for patron's information and creates and maintains a computer record of all the library's materials.
Prepares, issues and follows-up on notices. Identifies lost materials and deletes related records from the computer record of holdings.
Recommends changes to administrative superior to improve service.
Operates networked computers and computer printers, playback equipment, copiers, microfilm reader/printers, switchboard and voice mail telephone system.
Supervises volunteers in the performance of some clerical library functions.

Knowledge of the operation of the assigned library program.
Knowledge of technical library practices and procedures governing the technical processing, circulation, maintenance and location of library materials.
Knowledge of public contact skills employed in providing library services.
Knowledge of the operation of microfiche readers, calculators, copiers, typewriters and computer terminals.
Skill in selecting, locating and processing library materials.
Ability to effectively serve a wide variety of patrons.
Ability to elicit information to determine patron needs.
Ability to identify needed changes in assigned program and recommend to manager for implementation.
Ability to interpret and apply cataloging principles and utilize on-line data bases.
Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Library Technician Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Possession of an Associates degree or higher in Library and Information Science, English, or Education or related field
OR
Knowledge of researching and locating library and information resources using computerized and integrated library systems.
Knowledge of classic and contemporary literature.
Knowledge of customer service such as providing prompt, accurate, and courteous service to customers seeking information, answering requests as quickly as possible, ensuring customers are satisfied with service, and responding to complaints.
