Summary Statement

The class incumbent designs, develops and constructs interface units which operate with commercially available equipment in order to create improved systems for making pictorial records of the State's roadways.

Nature and Scope

The class incumbent works under the general direction of an administrative superior. The incumbent designs, develops, constructs or supervises the construction, maintains, repairs and operates road photologging and aerial photographic equipment. The incumbent also designs and constructs other photo/video devices for the Department of Transportation, performs special studies and operates standard video and photographic equipment. The class requires a high level of creative ability in equipment design.

  • Makes continuous efforts to improve the photo/video devices used by the Department of Transportation.
     
  • Designs, develops and constructs, or supervises the construction of interface units which improve the efficiency of standard photo/video systems.
     
  • Modifies existing equipment to improve operation.
     
  • Operates special and standard photo/video equipment.
     
  • Maintains and repairs the equipment.
     
  • Determines the need for new or improved equipment and submits proposals to funding agencies for the development of new concepts.
     
  • Catalogs and maintains the inventory of the Department's visual data obtained by photologging or aerial photography.
     
  • Performs studies to determine use and value of visual data collection in the fields of highway safety, traffic control devices, road design, signing, striping and other applications.
     
  • Assists in presentations which make use of videologging.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of photography, videography, electronics, mechanics and optical technologies.
  • Knowledge of the construction and operation of video and photographic cameras, tapes, optical memory, disc recorders and players and video and motion picture editing equipment.
  • Knowledge of the State's roadway system, traffic patterns, control devices, roadway design and lane technology.
  • Knowledge of standards, policies, Delaware Code and FHWA regulations relating to the collection of data.
  • Skill in the design and development of new equipment.
  • Skill in the use of specialized and standard video/photo equipment.
  • Skill in maintenance and repair of video/photo equipment.
  • Ability to recognize the need for new devices or improvements to existing ones.
  • Ability to invent new devices or modify existing ones.
  • Ability to operate unique and standard photo/video equipment.
  • Ability to maintain and repair unique and standard photo/video equipment.
