Summary Statement

Enforcement Officer Trainee is performing enforcement work at the entry level.  Required to work weekends, holidays, on-call status, and working in adverse weather conditions.  Within the first year applicant must attend and successfully complete the Delaware State Police Academy in Dover, Delaware.  This training academy is a residential program requiring the employee to live there on site during the week.  Employee is required to complete and pass all academy training and testing, i.e. physical ability test, medical exam, psychological test and drug screening and others required.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.
  • Implements appropriate law enforcement action in response to complaints, traffic,  criminal, regulatory and other activities.
     
  • Investigates suspicious and criminal activity which includes detecting, collecting and preserving physical evidence, interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects and defendants, processing charging documents, executing search and arrest warrants and processing defendants.
     
  • Performs vehicle and foot patrol of assigned areas.
     
  • Performs community policing through informational presentations and educational seminars for other state agencies, schools, the public and community organizations.
       
  • Provides protective services to state employees, visitors and the general public.
           
  • Conducts surveillances and performs undercover assignments.
     
  • Provides assistance to other law enforcement agencies as back-up or primary response.
     
  • Takes into custody and transports felons and prisoners.
     
  • Presents evidence and testimony and prosecutes cases in court.
      
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of reports pertaining to response of an incident, daily activity and investigations.
     
  • Calibrates, maintains and uses various technical instruments and equipment to determine safety compliance and operational readiness.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for DNREC Enforcement Trainee
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. At least 20 and 1/2 years of age.
  2. Associates degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Sociology or related field.

    OR

  1. At least 20 and 1/2 years of age.
  2. Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  3. Experience in conducting investigations which includes conducting interviews to obtain confidential information, gathering evidence and documenting findings.
  4. Experience in applying natural resources laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  5. Experience in narrative report writing.

Conditions of Hire

As a condition of hire you must possess a drivers license.

Pre-employment Drug Testing:  Upon a conditional offer, you must undergo pre-employment drug testing as part of the hiring process.

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.

Examination: A written test is required.  You will need to retake the exam if you have not applied in DEL by 3/24/2010. Applicants scheduled for examinations will be required to show photo identification to the exam proctor before taking the exam.  All scheduling notices will be sent via email to the applicant.  Please check your email for your scheduled exam date.
