Summary Statement

The Zoo Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for the zoo's animal collection and office buildings in accordance with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) standards and policies. Walking patrols will occur during all hours of the day and night and in all weather conditions. In addition, the Zoo Security Guard is expected to support the zoo's mission of exceptional animal welfare and conservation by adhering to safety and observation standards specific to the Brandywine Zoo.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Patrol zoo using security keying/check-in system on an hourly basis in all weather conditions year round.
  • Observe zoo thoroughly and critically during evening and overnight hours for any out of the ordinary activities.
  • Patrol and ensure all gates and perimeter are locked and secure at all times.
  • Close zoo at the end of the public day, escort patrons out and lock all gates.
  • Station at and open employee gate in mornings and monitor employees entering.
  • Station at and open employee gate at the end of the work day and close up employee gate after all are gone. 
  • Communicate verbally and in writing concerns, events out of the ordinary and other issues that occur when zoo managers are not present.
  • Keep nightly written record of patrol shift.
  • Assist with adverse events and weather conditions as they occur while on duty, including communicating with zoo managers, emergency responders and DNREC Park Rangers Assist with security at afterhours events.
  • Participate in necessary Division and State required trainings.
  • Maintain a safe environment for the animal collection when animal staff are not present.
  • Respect zoo policies and protocols regarding animal welfare, staff safety and confidentiality.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and good communication skills.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as required.

Criminal background check:  A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.  The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.    

Applicants must provide proof of negative Tuberculosis test within the last 12 months before start date.
