Summary Statement

The Delaware State Parks Conservation Corps (DSPCC) Veterans Corps is a program engaging military veterans in a limited term of employment to gain training, certification, and skills in natural resource management.  The positions will be located within all three counties, with occasional travel throughout the state.

A variety of Veterans Corp park positions are available at Killens or Bellevue State Park, may include the following:  

  • The Veterans Corps Team Leader will lead a team of 3 Veterans. Team members will engage in environmental stewardship and trail projects throughout Delaware State Parks. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions.  The Team Leader will coordinate activities with Park Administrator and Program Administrator and work alongside professional staff of Conservation Technicians, Field Biologists, Environmental Stewardship team members, and Trails crew.
  • Members will perform duties within the Environmental Stewardship, Trails and Arborist Program promoting the wise management and conservation of native wildlife and plant species within northern Delaware State Parks and Nature Preserves. 

Work is performed indoors, outdoors, evenings, and holidays as scheduled to meet Park needs.

Preferred Qualification

Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete for this position if job requirements are met.

  1. Knowledge of botany, biological sciences or natural resources.

Essential Functions

Team Leader

  • Provides daily supervision and guidance to a team of 3 Veterans Corps members.
  • Coordinates work, scheduling of team and supplies with Park Administrator, Park Superintendents, Environmental Stewardship Program Manager, Trails Program Manager and Arborist
  • Communicates with Program Administrator regarding team member issues 
  • Completes necessary reports and administrative forms.
  • Transports team to work locations.
  • Assists with land management activities to maintain the park’s natural areas, trails, meadows and shoreline.

Team Member

  • Assists with land management activities to maintain all State Park ecosystems including; forests, meadows and aquatic ecosystems with primary focus in New Castle County, Delaware.
  • Assist with native and invasive plant survey, identification, and invasive plant removal
  • Assist with wildlife management program
  • Use of power equipment to include chainsaws, mowers, and heavy construction equipment
  • Conduct targeted invasive plant control via mechanical and chemical applications
  • Trails Maintenance
  • Litter cleanup and waterway and shoreline cleanup.
  • Other occasional projects

  4. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Conditions of Hire
