Summary Statement

These summer YCC positions may be available:
Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Team Leader: $16.00 - these positions will provide daily leadership to a team of 5 YCC members through 8 weeks of the summer, ensuring all projects are completed, and members receive a meaningful outdoor experience.
Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Member:$13.25 - Multiple summer youth employment positions for young people aged 14 – 21 years of age with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Division of Parks and Recreation. Positions available on Field Teams working in each of the three counties, and individual park placements in one of the 14 DE State Parks statewide. All members complete park-based projects that impact visitor experience and conservation and trail projects throughout state parks in the team’s region. All positions are seasonal positions working up to 28 hours per week June 17 – August 8, 2024.

The mission of the Delaware State Parks YCC is to engage youth in important conservation and park projects while providing learning that fosters teamwork, self-esteem, social responsibility, and respect for the environment.

YCC Core components include:

  • Practical job work experience.
  • Environmental education and experiences.
  • Job and/or college preparation.
Consideration will also be given to students who are unable to adhere to these dates because of snow days and school schedule in June.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Assists with Park based projects.
  • Assists with native and invasive plant survey and identification.
  • Trail Maintenance and possible trail reconstruction/constructions projects.
  • Litter cleanup and waterway and shoreline cleanup.
  • Assists Conservation Technicians with grounds work throughout the park.
  • Assist Park visitors with facility and/or park resources use.
  • Assist in maintaining park resources and facilities.
  • May provide daily coordination and off-site leadership and guidance to team members.
  • May coordinate work and educational activities.
  • May complete necessary reports and administrative forms.
  • May transport team to work locations and education days as needed:
  • Other occasional projects may include: Historic building maintenance/preservation, assist other resource management projects (including wildlife management, and environmental education), Water quality monitoring, special events set up, logistics, station assistance, and tear down.
  • Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and good communication skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Must be 14 – 21 years of age.

  1. Must be 20-26 years of age.
  2. Six months experience working with children and young adults such as academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant or education teacher.
  3. Six months experience in using standard computer software programs for word processing, spreadsheets or databases.
  4. Knowledge of natural, cultural, historical resources or parks and recreation.
  5. Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Work shirts, protective equipment and tools will be provided. Transportation from base site to work area will be provided.
** This is an environmental stewardship summer job, not a summer camp experience; the participants will work hard, sometimes in difficult conditions including mud, hot sun, and mosquitoes and flies.
This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.
