Introduction



The Delaware Shorebird Project works to monitor and protect bird species of conservation concern migrating through the Delaware Bay each spring. 

Summary Statement

This position is with Delaware's Species Conservation and Research Program to assist the State Coastal Waterbird Biologist and the lead shorebird technician with the Delaware Shorebird Project. Primary responsibilities include collecting migratory shorebird data following standardized protocols, data entry, and assisting in field activities as needed including capturing and banding shorebirds using cannon nets and re-sighting marked shorebirds. Daily work requires walking up to 5 miles in sand, carrying equipment, using a spotting scope to distinguish colored leg bands and coded flags on shorebirds at a distance, and operating or trailering small boats. Duties outside the May field season include data entry and reporting, and assisting with other field projects, such as colonial waterbird surveys and fall shorebird surveys. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled, particularly during the May field season. Anticipated Thursday-Sunday work week for three weeks in May before return to standard for the duration of the season. Housing with the field team is available and encouraged during the technician’s work week in May to accommodate irregular hours but is not available outside of the May field season.

• Provides technical support in studies, surveys and research projects. 
• Survey and monitor bird populations. 
• Trapping and banding. 
• Work cooperatively with other seasonals, volunteers and Division of Fish and Wildlife staff.
• Provides technical information and assistance to the public.
• Maintains accurate records and prepares reports. 
• Assists in data entry.
• Maintains records and reports detailing daily activities. 
• Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills. 
• Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Control Technician II. Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: 

1. Six months experience in conducting field work to collect samples and survey data. 
2. Six months experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals. 
3. Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures. 
4. Six months experience in narrative report writing. 
5. Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data. 
6. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
