Nature and Scope

The incumbent in this class is performing at the skilled level complex inspection, maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of the automotive equipment such as automobiles, tractors, trucks and other light and heavy ground maintenance and construction equipment including mechanical and hydraulic systems.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Inspects vehicles to ascertain the cause of the malfunction and determine the extent of the repair work necessary. Road tests automobiles, trucks, tractors or other motor vehicles for diagnostic purposes.
  2. Removes and installs complete assemblies such as engines, transmissions and axles, rebuilds components of engines, transmissions and other driveline components.
  3. Disassembles and overhauls both gasoline and diesel engines.
  4. Inspects, diagnoses, repairs and/or replaces standard components and sub-assemblies such as alternators, oil and fuel pumps, starters, brakes and the front end.
  5. Analyzes engine performance by using electronic equipment to test distributor resistance, manifold vacuum, fuel pump vacuum, cylinder compression, etc., performs engine tune-up.
  6. Makes minor repairs to vehicle fenders and/or body parts.
  7. Performs gas and electrical welding and minor body repairs.
  8. Answers emergency road service calls to repair equipment outside the shop or to operate a tow truck/wrecker.
  9. Instructs other mechanics in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
  10. Performs assigned tasks during emergency operations.
  11. Keeps records and prepares written reports.
  12. Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, tools and practices of the automotive trade.
  • Knowledge of the principal operation of the internal combustion engine (gasoline and diesel) and the other components such as the brake system, the electrical system, the hydraulic system, etc.
  • Skill in the diagnosis of complex repair problems regarding automotive equipment.
  • Skill in the care and use of tools, machinery and equipment used in the trade.
  • Skill in basic mathematical computation.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical malfunctions of motor vehicles.
  • Ability to understand and perform as per verbal and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to keep records and prepare written reports.
  • Ability to train other mechanics in the repair of automobile equipment.
  • Ability to learn the basic principles and techniques of the welding trade.
  • Ability to interpret technical automotive manuals.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience performing complex maintenance and repair of automotive vehicles and heavy equipment. Experience in gas and electric welding and minor body repairs. Ability to communicate effectively.
