Nature and Scope

The Firearm Examiner position is a professional and technical position involving forensic examinations in the area of firearm, toolmarks, serial number restoration and gunshot residue analysis associated with routine and complicated police investigations.  Also prepare comprehensive investigative reports, photograph firearms, test-fire suspect weapons, determine muzzle proximity and testify in Court as an expert witness.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Examinations of firearms for operational capabilities
  • Comparison of fired projectiles and cartridge cases
  • Gunshot residue analysis for distance determinations
  • Tool mark examinations and comparisons
  • Serial number restorations
  • Photograph firearms
  • Interpretation of laboratory analyses and results
  • Operation of IBIS/NIBIN system
  • Preparation of written reports
  • Expert witness testimony in Court
  • Supervise a staff of full time, casual seasonal and contracted employees
  • Assist other sections and jurisdictions with examination requests

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas. Failure in any one area will result in a rating of "not qualified."  

  • Bachelor of Science Degree
  • Qualified firearms and toolmark examiner as stipulated by the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE).
  • Court qualified as an expert witness
  • Full time experience conducting examinations of firearms, bullets and related evidence as a firearm examiner
  • Computer skills including the use of the IBIS/NIBIN system
  • Supervisory experience

Conditions of Employment

Direct deposit of paychecks is required as a condition of employment. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of employment.

This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16.  This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms.
