Introduction


Nature of Work

Proficient in the operation of a school bus for the safe and efficient transportation of students with and without disabilities to and from school. Performs and records daily safety checks on bus and bus components including inspection of tires, lights, fuel level, oil level, and windshield wipers, and in reporting defective equipment for repair in a timely manner. Conducts emergency and evacuation drills, completes incident reports and reports violations of state school bus law as required. Maintains effective control over groups of children or young adult students to ensure student behavior does not distract safe driving. Communicates with the dispatcher and supervisor utilizing two-way radio transmitter.

Minimum Experience

Must have 4 years of experience in operating over the road motorized vehicles (cars, trucks, buses or SUV's either for personal use or job related).

Age

Must be at least 21 years of age at time of examination.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid Ohio Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) with School Bus and Passenger endorsements, and no air brake restriction at time of examination. LICENSE MUST BE PRESENTED AT TIME OF EXAMINATION.

General Requirements

Must be insurable by the Board of Education's insurance carrier (disqualifying factors: DUI, more than 6 points on driving record in the past 3 years, etc.). Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must pass an annual Ohio Department of Education physical.

Citizenship

Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the United States at time of application.

Background Investigation

Must be able to pass the Federal and State Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation report in accordance with Section 3301-83-06 of the Ohio Administrative Code.

Military Credit

Open Competitive applicants who have had military service will receive an additional credit of 20% if a passing grade is attained. TO OBTAIN CREDIT, A NON-RETURNABLE COPY OF THE DD214 OR CERTIFICATE OF SERVICE (INDICATING HONORABLE DISCHARGE) MUST BE SUBMITTED AT TIME OF EXAMINATION.

Notes

In the event of identical exam scores, the tie will be broken in favor of the candidate who received military credit. If a tie score still exists, the tie will be broken by a random selection method.

Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Final appointment may be contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination, drug screen and/or police background investigation and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity. Applicants are responsible for providing all necessary employment dates, experience, training, or any other requirements as stated in the Exam Announcement, in order for their application to be considered for certification and admittance to the examination process.
