Introduction

Responsibilities

The Environmental Risk Assessor's (ERA) main objective is to protect the City's drinking water.  Working as part of a team, the ERA is responsible for groundwater risk identification, assessment and evaluation across the Source Water Protection Program (SWPP).  Must have comprehensive scientific knowledge, awareness of the regional aquifer and river systems, familiarity with Ohio and U.S. EPA rules and regulations, and an understanding of personal and public health risks posed by hazardous materials. The Risk Assessor conducts environmental audits; assesses chemical type and potential fate in groundwater and provides recommendations to assist businesses and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in identifying appropriate remediation technologies to mitigate contamination.  The incumbent will assist businesses with the development, implementation, and monitoring of programs for emergency response and for the safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals in accordance with all federal, state, local, and SWPP requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Toxicology, Geology, Chemistry, Biology, Public Health, Environmental Science, Water Resource Management, Risk Assessment/Management or closely related field AND 5 years of experience in risk assessment/management; OR Master's degree in Toxicology, Geology, Chemistry, Biology, Public Health, Environmental Science, Water Resource Management, Risk Assessment/Management or closely related field AND 3 years of experience in risk assessment/management.

Must have experience in any of the following:  project management, use of metrics, statistics, or cost-benefit analysis.

Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region. 

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain as a term and condition of continued employment.


Special Requirements

Within 12 months of appointment, MUST OBTAIN certification in Hazardous Materials Incident Operations (HAZWOPER), and maintain as a term and condition of continued employment.

Appointment to positions in this classification will require applicants to pass a police background investigation. Final permanent appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination, including drug screen, and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity.
