Community Engagement Specialist

Responsibilities

The Community Engagement Specialist is an entry-level professional position in which incumbents facilitate collaboration and communication between residents, neighborhood associations, community institutions and the City organization to ensure implementation of community development programs and initiatives. Incumbents are required to develop in-depth knowledge within their assigned area of responsibility, analyze and maintain all data and information for projects and programs, and provide periodic and annual progress reports. Must become familiar with the assigned neighborhoods, geography, people, and assets and establish a good working knowledge of all city policies and procedures, as well as services provided by other agencies (social services, county or state governments, private sector, etc.) which could benefit residents. Community Engagement Specialists maintain communications, make presentations, and work with residents and community stakeholders to encourage their input regarding interests of the community, identifying priorities, sharing information, visioning, networking, strategic planning and other creative approaches that encourage collaboration and involvement. Incumbents in this position may work with and provide support to the Welcome Dayton Initiative and Committee. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications

Must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Community Development or a closely related field AND have one year of community related work or volunteer experience; OR

  2. Associate's degree AND 5 years of community related work or volunteer experience.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Background Check 
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position. 

Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing 
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
