Responsibilities
Responsible for the maintenance and care of municipal street and park trees, and equipment and allied operations. Climbs trees using safety saddle, ropes, safety belt, and spurs. Operates aerial lift trucks and telescopic boom cranes in order to service trees; operates power pruners, power saws, sprayers, chippers, generators, trucks, dump hoists, and other special tree service and nursery equipment; removes stumps using specialized motorized equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.).
Experience
Must have 2 years of experience in a tree maintenance operation INCLUDING one year of experience using an aerial bucket truck and performing tree maintenance activities at above ground level heights using a rope and saddle, chainsaw and wood chipper.
License Requirements
Must have a valid Ohio Class B Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) at time of appointment, including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio and maintain said license. Out of state residents must have equivalent licenses from their state of residence.
Within 150 days of appointment, must obtain and maintain a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.), including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio. Out of state employees must have the equivalency of this license from their state of residency.
Promotional Qualifications
Must be a full-time permanent or part-time permanent employee in pay grade 115 (Wage) or below, pay grade 25 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent, and been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position. Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection method.
Open Competitive Applicants
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination, and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity. Identical scores will be broken by a random selection method.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Incumbent is expected to stay abreast of current technological methods and have knowledge, skills & abilities including, but not limited to the following areas:
- Working knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in shade tree service and related arboricultural work.
- Working knowledge of the safety precautions practiced in shade tree maintenance work using specialize tree service equipment.
- Ability and willingness to learn a wide variety of skilled tasks required in shade tree service and maintenance work.
- Ability and willingness to acquire skill in climbing trees, working at excessive heights near high tension lines and use of special tree service equipment.
- Ability to learn and observe proper safety precautions.
- Good physical condition and health sufficient to perform tasks requiring strength and agility at heights under varying weather conditions.

Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Applicants appearing on the Promotional eligible list shall be considered for appointment prior to those on the Open Competitive list.

Background Check
A background investigation is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.
Drug and Nicotine Testing
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
