Head Lifesaving Instructor - PT

Responsibilities

The incumbent's primary role includes, but is not limited to, supervising and instructing aquatic personnel in the duties and responsibilities of their work; trains newly assigned Lifeguards on the policies and procedures relating to the maintenance of order and discipline, emergency first aide and employee work rules; monitors the performance of Lifeguards during swimming pool operational hours.  The incumbent conducts in-service training seminars, and enforces all safety rules and regulations pertaining to the operation of a swimming pool; guards the swimming pool to direct water safety, and prevent accidents; ensures that non-swimming participants stay in shallow water; maintains order and discipline of participants in pool.  Gathers information and maintains various written records relating to pool operations, maintenance and cleaning of pool and pool equipment.  Treats pool water to maintain proper chemical balance. Assists in planning special activities and programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.).

Experience 
Two (2) years of experience as a Lifeguard at an aquatic facility. Two (2) years of teaching or coaching in the aquatic field may substitute for lifeguard experience.

Certifications

Must possess and maintain current and valid certificates in Lifeguarding AND First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer/Instructor or successor courses offered by the American Red Cross.  Must maintain all certifications required by state, federal and local laws in order to practice and teach lifeguard skills as a term and condition of continued employment.

Within 90 days of hire, MUST obtain and maintain Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification as a term and condition of continued employment.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Notes

Background Check
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position. 

Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing 
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
