IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The Hillsborough County Public Works Department is seeking a Field Data Technician to perform spatial field data collection on county-owned lands and public and private projects.  The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of GIS mapping, aerial photos, blueprints, field survey notes deeds, parcel data and other engineering plans & sketches.  Be familiar with the concepts of stormwater, transportation, and traffic infrastructure. Being familiar with GIS Web and desktop applications is a plus. Experience working in traffic effectively maintaining safety and production. Candidates must have the ability to work in varying weather environments and have the ability walk long distances and stand for prolonged periods of time.

JOB OVERVIEW

This position exists to support the Asset Register which is comprised of a complete system of records, including spatial databases, reference drawings, and data/documents related to all department-maintained infrastructure assets. The incumbent in this position performs a variety of average to complex asset inventory inspections on the County's stormwater, transportation, and/or traffic management infrastructure and will be a part of the Public Works Geomatics Asset Inventory Team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Possession of a valid Driver License.

OR

An equivalent combination of training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-specific competencies noted above; and
Possession of a valid Driver License.

WORK CATEGORY

Light work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  If the use of arm and/or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that of sedentary work and if the worker sits most of the time, the job is considered light work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Predominately working in built environment and Right-of-Way, outdoors in various weather conditions and sometimes on rugged terrain.
  • Sitting, driving, walking, lifting, kneeling, bending, stooping, carrying tools, possible manual digging to investigate/verify infrastructure, and opening manhole lids.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below:

    • Performs condition coding on Stormwater assets and reports failed assets immediately.
    • Verifies and updates as-built Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data in the field to ensure geographically accurate representation of Stormwater systems.
    • Ensures tabular completeness of records in online GIS database.
    • Maintains equipment for field data collection and keeps equipment clean, organized, and prepared to be used at any time.
    • Performs basic heads-up digitizing in an office environment, including rudimentary quality control tasks.
    • Performs related work as required.

      JOB SPECIFICATIONS

      • Knowledge of GIS mapping.
      • Familiarity with spatial data collection.
      • Some ability to read and understand aerial photos, blueprints, field survey notes, deeds, plats, parcel data, engineering plans and sketches.
      • Skill in using technical devices such as tablets, cell phones, WIFI, desktop PC, laptop and the associated software for each as needed.

        • Holidays: Employees receive up to 12 paid holidays per year.
