IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The Hillsborough County Public Works Department is seeking a Field Operations Supervisor to supervise maintenance crews in the maintenance and preservation of infrastructure assets, such as sidewalks, roadways, bridges, pavement, curbs and inlets, trees and stormwater ditches.  The ideal candidate must have the ability to work along side busy roadways performing manual labor in outside environment, exposed to heat, sun, high humidity, rain and other adverse weather conditions .  Candidate will walk/stand for prolonged periods of time (approximately six (6) hours) per day. The job also requires frequent fine manipulations, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 30 pounds, and occasional bending, crawling, climbing and stooping.  Ideal candidate will possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s license.

JOB OVERVIEW

Performs supervisory duties directing activities of work crew in construction, repair, maintenance, equipment operations and landscaping functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Three years of experience as a supervisor of a construction, maintenance or landscaping crew; and
A valid Driver License or Commercial Driver License (CDL).

OR

An equivalent combination of education (Not less than a high school diploma/GED,) training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; and
A valid Driver License or Commercial Driver License (CDL).

WORK CATEGORY

Medium work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • In the performance of the job duties, the employee will work in a variety of outdoor/indoor environments including construction sites roadway maintenance, maintenance shops and natural resource areas.
  • This position will work in all types of weather conditions and environments including but not limited to possible high, precarious places and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration. The noise level in the environment is quiet to loud.
  • The employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk, hear; and smell.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Plans, schedules, directs and supervises the activities of multiple work crews engaged in any of the following activities: construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, canals and ditches; the clearing of land; the installation, repair and maintenance of water and waste water lines, meter and force mains; the removal of structures; the construction of facilities such as parks, park buildings, and park grounds; landfill operations the transfer and hauling of bulk waste material; and the repair and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
    • Supervises a crew of prisoners, community service workers or work release persons engaged in construction, maintenance or equipment operation.
    • Provides technical assistance to subordinates.
    • Provides instructions and reviews work for compliance with plans, codes, standards and regulations.
    • Helps resolve job related problems; and reviews work for compliance with plans, codes, standards and regulations.
    • Ensures that all necessary tools, supplies, materials, and equipment are available for efficient and timely completion of job assignments.
    • Maintains operational records and prepares special and routine reports.
    • Enforces the observance of safety regulations pertaining to tools, machinery, vehicles, work areas, and equipment utilized.
    • Operates equipment.
    • Performs other related duties as required.

      JOB SPECIFICATIONS

      • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, tools and equipment used in construction, maintenance, landscaping and repair work.
      • Knowledge of state and local construction rules, regulations and procedures and safety regulations.
      • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of construction equipment.
      • Ability to work effectively with others.
      • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings to establish grades and set elevations.
      • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others.
