IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The Hillsborough County Public Works Department is seeking an Engineering Associate to assist in the in the activities of project development team as defined by the supported program. The Project Development Team functions as the department’s internal scoping mechanism to create projects of value for our transportation group within the Public Right-of-way. Direct programs serviced by this team are the following: the Resurfacing Program, the Stormwater Program, the Traffic Program, and the Pedestrian Safety Program. The candidates will need strong communication abilities and effectively work with others to determine agreeable solutions to issues.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Engineering Associate will be responsible to assist in the activities of project development team as defined by the supported program. The Project Development Team functions as the department’s internal scoping mechanism to create projects of value for our transportation group within the Public Right-of-way. Direct programs serviced by this team are the following: the Resurfacing Program, the Stormwater Program, the Traffic Program, and the Pedestrian Safety Program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major in Engineering or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in an Engineering-related field;

and

Six years of experience with design considerations within the public right-of-way, as it relates to the following disciplines: roadway and stormwater design standards, construction operations, roadway and drainage infrastructure inspection, and traffic operations.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

OR

An equivalent combination of relevant education (not less than possession of a High School diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-specific competencies noted above.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

WORK CATEGORY

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below:

  • Creates computer-aided (CADD) drawings for engineering designs and maps
  • Investigates public concerns involving safety engineering related questions and provides recommendation to supervisor
  • Listens and meets with the public about their individual concerns, as needed
  • Plots maps and charts showing profiles and cross-sections, indicating relation of topographical contours and elevations
  • Work with LIDAR data to create conceptual construction plans
  • Drafts detailed drawings of structures and installations, such as roads, culverts, ditches, as directed
  • Performs other related duties, as requested and required

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of general engineering principles and practices
  • Working knowledge of design criteria and standards (local or state), Manual on
    Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
  • Ability to create, review, and interpret engineering drawings
  • Physical ability for extended field reviews/investigations
  • Ability to create, or learn to create, engineering construction plans using
    Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software
  • Experience with computer operating systems and software (Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to identify discrepancies between works requested, and performed, as it relates to engineering construction requirements
  • Capacity to communicate clearly in a small group discussion about engineering related topics
  • Ability to document accurate field notes
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations, as directed
  • Communicate with other individuals, in a respectful and considerate manner
  • Ability to listen, and comprehend the challenges being addressed

    • Tuition Reimbursement: Employees may be reimbursed up to $1,000 (undergraduate), $2000 (graduate) per fiscal year for classes at an accredited college or university for courses that enhance your ability to perform your current job duties.
    • Holidays: Employees receive up to twelve (12) paid holidays per year.
