IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, with a sound knowledge of English and Spanish grammar, punctuation, spelling, and proofreading. Has considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations/media relations strategy development. Is able to write and edit news releases and articles. Excels at writing and planning media pitches. Is able to create and manage custom digital content. Possesses a thorough understanding of the local, regional, and national media markets and respects deadlines. Is able to use considerable initiative, think independently, and exercise sound judgment. Is able to handle extremely delicate/sensitive relationships and complex situations, information, and materials. Has a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, influencers, and target audiences. Possesses a working knowledge of SEO. Is able to manage content and program development end-to-end. Has considerable knowledge of crisis communication strategy and execution.

JOB OVERVIEW

The media relations strategist: Develops media relations campaigns and strategies related to special events, programs, and county initiatives. Responds to media in an efficient and timely manner. Provides public and media relations guidance and training to departments, including counsel related to media relations strategies, communications plans, social media, and events. Develops proactive media outreach strategies including news releases, pitches, collateral development, web content/brand journalism, and overall messaging. Tracks, monitors, and evaluates activities, placements and accomplishments. Collaborates with internal and external publics as needed to ensure effective, well-executed public relations and marketing programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's degree; AND

Two years of experience planning, implementing or managing public relations, community relations, marketing, or integrated communications programs.

OR

An equivalent combination of education (not less than possession of a High School diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job specific competencies listed above.

    WORK CATEGORY

    The Media Relations Strategist works in an office environment, and uses a desktop or laptop computer daily. Travel within county limits is expected, as the MRS will attend County events, and will be meeting with other County departments. Candidate must possess a valid driver's license, and be able operate a vehicle safely and efficiently by following safety protocols and procedures at all times. Some after hours and/or weekends can be expected. Media Relations Strategist is expected to perform shift work in official capacity during Emergency Operations Center activations.

      DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

      • Develops media relations campaigns and strategies related to special events, programs, and county initiatives.

      Knowledge, skills, and abilities would include: 

      • Bilingual - fluent in English and Hispanic, verbal and written communication. Steady and analytical editorial judgment. 
      • Ability to thrive under tight deadlines and utilize poise and tact during difficult situations. 
      • Knowledge of local, regional, and national current events/trends. 
      • Knowledge of english and hispanic media outlets. 
      • Knowledge of how media outlets function internally, and how media interacts with government. 
      • Strong media relations plan development and execution. 
      • Strong crisis management skills. 
      • Strong copywriting, editorial, and fact finding skills. 
      • Working knowledge of technology and trends for communications.
      • Ability to research and target influencers and key audiences. 
      • Knowledge of emergency management functions and responsibilities.

        • Tuition Reimbursement: Employees may be reimbursed up to $1,000 (undergraduate), $2000 (graduate) per fiscal year for classes at an accredited college or university for courses that enhance your ability to perform your current job duties.
        • Holidays: Employees receive up to twelve (12) paid holidays per year.
