Supervises, monitors, and participates in the operation of computer systems and related networking devices processing business data according to operating instructions and personally troubleshoots the more difficult system failures and data processing errors in the District's central data center.

Supervises, monitors, and operates computer systems and related network input and output devices used to process business data in the District's central data center.

Uses systems management software to monitor computer and network operations at multiple locations and determines the course of action to be taken in case of malfunction.

Establishes the sequence of daily and ad hoc business data production batch job runs and selects the method of processing in an effective and efficient manner.

Troubleshoots the more difficult system and data processing failures and makes appropriate corrections.

Assigns tasks to subordinate operations staff, provides supervision, and evaluates performance against established standards and goals.

Contacts higher-level technical staff or vendors when appropriate for network hardware and software repairs and maintenance.

Provides on-the-job training to subordinate operations staff.

Oversees and participates in the documentation of computer and network usage and malfunctions.

Maintains a current knowledge of computer hardware and software updates by attending and participating in seminars, conferences, workshops, and other training sessions.

May represent higher-level computer and network operations staff in their absence.

Performs related duties as assigned.

A Computer Operations Supervisor is responsible for supervising, monitoring, and participating in the operation of computer systems and related network devices processing business data according to operating instructions and personally troubleshoots the more difficult system failures and data processing errors in the District's central data center.

A Computer Systems Operator operates and monitors computer systems and related network input and output devices, and troubleshoots routine system failures and processing errors in the District's central data center.

General supervision is received from a technical information technology manager. Immediate supervision is exercised over assigned data center staff.

Methods and instruments used to troubleshoot equipment and basic network malfunctions

Capabilities of computer systems, software, and hardware common to a centralized data center

Ability to:

Supervise and monitor assigned computer and network systems operations of the District's central data center

Work in a computing environment which requires concurrent processing of multiple tasks

Troubleshoot data processing problems and take corrective, effective action rapidly

Maintain a focus on details, quality, and precision in the performance of duties

Develop  operating procedures and flowcharts

Work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of a diverse pool of District staff

Prepare clear and concise reports

Learn the characteristics of new computer systems, software, and hardware and update technical skills to adapt to changing technology

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND twelve units of college-level course work or its equivalent in computer science, computer information technology, or a related field AND three years of recent, full-time paid experience in computer and/or network operations in a large scale computer environment. Experience in a data center serving multiple sites is desirable. One year of the required experience must have been in a supervisory capacity. A successfully completed college-level course in supervision or management may substitute for the required one year of experience in a supervisory capacity.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds
