Performs skilled journey-level interior and exterior plastering and cement finishing in the alteration, maintenance, construction, and repair of college facilities.
Mixes various types of plaster, mortar, and concrete for poured walls, block walls, ceilings, floors, steps, curbs, sidewalks, and driveways.
Applies various plaster finishes such as sand and textured finishes and putty coats.
Performs work such as tearing away plaster, removing cement work, preparing surfaces, excavating, and making subgrades for cement work.
Patches plaster walls and ceilings.
Performs hand and machine troweling in the finishing of cement surfaces.
Erects, rigs, moves, and works from scaffolds, swing stages, and extension ladders.
Adjusts, maintains, and makes minor repairs on plastering hand and power tools and equipment to ensure their safe and efficient operation.
Safely operates hand and power tools and equipment used in the plastering trade.
Maintains plastering hand and power tools and equipment to ensure their safe and efficient operation.
Maintains shop area and supplies in a safe, clean, and orderly condition to prevent damage and exposure to moisture.
Reviews plans, blueprints, and specifications for plastering projects to understand scope of projects, complete assigned work orders, and recommend potential changes to supervisor.
May set forms for concrete steps, walks, driveways, and foundations.
May perform minor repairs to brickwork and minor reinforcing in preparation for cement work.
May assist in estimating job costs, preparing material lists and job records, and maintaining an inventory of supplies and tools for assigned area/projects.
May inspect facilities for maintenance and safety problems related to plastering materials.
May assist in inspecting plastering work performed by outside contractors.
May assist in developing job specifications, diagrams, and blueprints related to plastering work.
May provide work direction to staff assigned to the plastering and cement-finishing unit.
Performs related duties as assigned.
A Plasterer performs journey-level plastering and cement-finishing work at a college.
A General Foreman plans, coordinates, and supervises the work of skilled journey-level workers of at least three building trades and other staff assigned to work projects at a college and has job site responsibility for various building trades projects.
General supervision is received from a General Foreman or Director of College Facilities. May provide work direction to Maintenance Assistants.
Knowledge of:
Current processes, materials, tools and equipment, and mixtures used in preparing and applying various types of plaster and cement finishes
Various government ordinances covering the installation of walks, curbs, and driveways
Methods used in setting up forms for concrete pouring
Safety precautions required for the application, handling, and storing of plastering materials
Safety regulations pertaining to erecting and working on ladders, swing stages, rigging, and scaffolds
Harmful effects of hazardous or toxic materials and the protection and safeguard required when working with or controlling such materials
Basic recordkeeping procedures
Capabilities of computer applications, systems, and hardware used in the plastering trade
Skill in:
Using tools and equipment of the trade
Ability to:
Apply the skills and practices of the trade to varying circumstances and conditions
Detect and repair flaws in plaster and cement surfaces
Determine when plaster bases are in proper condition to receive plaster
Clean, adjust, maintain, and make minor repairs on plastering equipment
Read, interpret, and work from sketches, drawings, plans, and blueprints
Safely operate tools and machines in the plastering trade
Safely erect and work from ladders, riggings, and scaffolds
Safely lift heavy equipment and materials
Keep accurate records
Work effectively and cooperatively with a diverse pool of other District staff, students, and outside contractors
Effectively utilized computer systems and software applicable to the plastering trade
Follow oral and written instructions
Learn the characteristics of new equipment of the plastering trade and update skills to adapt to changing technology
Learn general and specialized software applications
Education and Experience:
A. Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND completion of a recognized apprentice training program of at least four years’ duration in the plastering trade AND one year of full-time, paid, journey-level experience in the plastering trade. Experience in cement finishing and/or masonry is also required.
OR
B. Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND five years of full-time, paid experience in plastering work under the supervision of a journeyman or crafts supervisor. One year of the required experience must have been at the journey-level. Experience in cement finishing and/or masonry is also required.
Special:
A valid Class “C” California driver's license may be required for some positions.
Travel to locations throughout the District may be required for some positions.
Physical Requirement:
Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
