Monitors and maintains one or more instructional architecture laboratories, such as a model shop and/or computer lab, and assists students and faculty with instructional activities.
Schedules and oversees the use of one or more instructional architecture laboratories by students, faculty, and staff.
Instructs students individually in the proper and safe operation of a variety of tools and equipment; orients students to established laboratory policies; administers certification process for proper and safe usage of tools and equipment by students.
Issues and receives supplies, materials, tools, and equipment for student use in laboratory and classroom assignments; facilitates and keeps records of the return of items loaned to students.
Operates, maintains, and makes minor adjustments and repairs to a variety of hand tools and equipment such as printer/plotter machines, rapid prototyping machines, laser cutters, power saws, drills, lathes, and milling machines.
Provides assistance to students with the use of specialized architectural computer-aided design/drafting programs.
Maintains inventory records of supplies, material, tools, and equipment and prepares requisitions as needed.
Stores supplies, materials, tools, and equipment; keeps storerooms and working areas orderly and clean.
Assists instructional staff with the development of classroom assignments and materials to facilitate effective scheduling of resources, ensure the availability of tools, and guarantee safe practices.
Advises instructional staff of problems encountered with the educational program or with the progress of individual students.
May build teaching aids and service equipment on the instructional floor.
May design layout of laboratory and build storage units such as shelves, cabinets, and tool racks.
May perform software installations and updates of programs for assigned area.
May provide assistance in LAN (Local Area Network) operation and maintenance of an assigned computer laboratory related to the installation and configuration of workstations and basic troubleshooting of network malfunctions.
May assist academic staff with research of product specifications related to software and hardware purchasing options.
May provide training and work direction to student employees.
Performs related duties as assigned.
An Instructional Assistant, Architecture, applies knowledge of architectural design, drawing, drafting, digital fabrication, and modeling in assisting students and faculty with instructional activities and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of one or more architecture laboratories, including the preparation of supplies, materials, tools, and equipment; maintenance of equipment and facilities; and proper and safe use of equipment and materials.
Instructional Assistants in other academic disciplines are responsible for the day-to-day operations of instructional laboratories and apply their specialized knowledge to a broad range of duties related to the day-to-day operations of their academic departments.
General supervision is received from an academic supervisor. Functional supervision may be received from instructional staff. Work direction may be provided to student employees.
Knowledge of:
Basic principles of architectural design, drawing, drafting, digital fabrication, and modeling
Supplies, materials, tools, and equipment used in an architecture laboratory
Health and safety practices and precautions applicable to an architecture laboratory
Capabilities of computer systems, software, and hardware common to instructional architecture laboratories
Recordkeeping procedures
Ability to:
Provide instructional assistance to students and instructional staff
Operate, explain, and demonstrate the proper and safe use of a variety of tools and equipment
Operate, adapt, and maintain tools and equipment used in architectural modeling and design
Effectively utilize computer hardware and software of assigned instructional laboratories
Perform minor repairs and adjustments to a variety of laboratory equipment
Follow complex instructions in the preparation and construction of supplies and equipment setups
Secure and store supplies

Education and Experience:
A. An associate degree or its equivalent from a recognized college or university with a major in architecture or a related field.
OR
B. Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND two years of full-time, paid experience as a technician which involved familiarity with the principles of architectural design and modeling and the use of associated tools and equipment.
