Plans, coordinates, supervises, and participates in the operation of a swimming pool and schedules and monitors swimming activities.

Coordinates scheduling and use of swimming pool facilities with instructional staff, athletic teams, community service managers, and community groups.

Supervises staff engaged in operating, adjusting, and maintaining disinfection systems, pumps, chlorinators, heating and filtration systems and other swimming pool related equipment.

Inspects pool equipment and facilities on a regular basis to ensure compliance with State and County health and safety regulations and for proper operation, damage or defects, and cleanliness; submits maintenance repair requests as needed.

Establishes procedures for responding to emergencies.

Responds to routine and serious inquiries, complaints, and emergency situations.

Develops and enforces safety policies and rules for the use of the pool and surrounding areas.

Works with campus Business Office staff to develop appropriate control procedures for collection of admission fees, handling of cash, and the reporting of cash receipts.

Schedules, assigns, trains, and supervises the work of Pool Lifeguards and others needed to work during regular hours of operation and at special events.

Supervises or participates in the collection of admission fees.

Maintains inventory of swimming pool supplies such as chemicals, safety equipment, and training equipment and replenishes stock when necessary.

Maintains records of ticket receipts and makes reports of event attendance.

Provides information regarding pool activities to college offices and the community.

Oversees the testing of pool water for proper chemical content.

Provides training in water safety and swimming, diving and lifesaving.

May test pool water and operate swimming pool in the absence of lower-level staff.

Performs related duties as assigned.

A Swimming Pool Supervisor plans, coordinates, supervises, and participates in the day-to-day operation of a swimming pool including arranging swimming schedules and overseeing swimming activities.

A Pool Operations Technician makes tests of swimming pool water, operates pool equipment, and performs a variety of custodial work to keep a campus swimming pool facility in a sanitary and orderly condition.

General supervision is received from an academic or classified supervisor. Immediate supervision is exercised over Pool Lifeguards and Pool Operations Technicians.

Knowledge of:

Policies and procedures of swimming pool operation and maintenance

Lifesaving methods including techniques of resuscitation and first aid

Equipment and materials used for cleaning and sanitation of a swimming pool

Safety and health practices pertaining to a swimming pool operation

Basic bookkeeping practices and procedures

Principles of training and supervision

Recordkeeping procedures

Basic operations of computer and office equipment

Ability to:

Plan and coordinate a swimming pool operation program

Demonstrate and teach first-aid methods, water safety, and swimming, diving, and lifesaving techniques

Train and supervise the work of others

Respond appropriately in emergency situations

Deal effectively and tactfully with a diverse pool of college students, instructional staff, and community members

Keep detailed and accurate records

Communicate effectively orally and in writing

Give clear and concise instructions

Learn general and specialized computer applications

Education and Experience:

A. An associate degree or its equivalent from a recognized college or university with a major in recreation or a related field AND one year of full-time, paid experience in managing a swimming pool operation or in swimming instruction, lifesaving, and first aid work.

OR

B. Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND three years of full-time, paid experience in managing a swimming pool operation or in swimming instruction, lifesaving, and first aid work.

Special:

A valid Water Safety Instructor Certificate issued by the American Red Cross.

A valid Lifeguard Training Certificate or its equivalent issued by the American Red Cross or American Lifeguard Association.

A valid First Aid Certificate or its equivalent issued by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

A valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificate or its equivalent issued by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

A valid Lifeguard Instructor Certificate issued by the American Red Cross may be required for some positions.
