Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

The primary
purpose of this position is to oversee and guide mechanics, while also engaging
in highly specialized work related to the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of
trucks, heavy equipment, automobiles, motorcycles, and law enforcement pursuit
vehicles. Additionally, the role involves managing the overall operations of a
fleet shop.
Key
responsibilities include supervising and instructing mechanics and service
personnel in the repair, maintenance, and diagnosis of a diverse range of
vehicles, such as large trucks, off-road equipment, light trucks, motorcycles,
and small engines. The position requires proficient knowledge and skill in
performing repairs on light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, as well as off-road
machinery. Duties also include effective communication with parts department
staff, external businesses, and internal divisions, while handling various
other tasks as required.
Incumbents
troubleshoot and repair electrical and hydraulic systems across a variety of
vehicle types and models, as well as brake systems on heavy equipment. In
addition, they take on more complex repairs as necessary, reporting directly to
the Garage Superintendent.
Applicants must have at
least five years of recent experience as an automotive, diesel engine, heavy
equipment mechanic and at least one year of experience working independently as
a lead mechanic. Applicants must also have experience using computer
testing or diagnostic equipment on vehicle, diesel engines, heavy equipment.
NOTE: Qualifying
education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills
and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
The candidate must be available to respond outside of standard working
hours, including both day and night shifts, and be on-call 24/7 in emergency
situations or as required. A current Alabama Driver's License with an insurable
driving record is mandatory. The candidate must be willing to obtain an Alabama
Commercial Driver’s License. A valid Commercial Driver's License (Class A) from
the State of Alabama is required or must be obtained within six (6) months of
employment.
The candidate must be able to attend out-of-town specialized training
sessions as necessary to maintain or enhance skills.
The role requires the physical ability to lift and maneuver heavy
equipment, engine components, and body parts, such as batteries and brake
drums, weighing between 50-100 pounds, both with and without assistance. The
candidate must be capable of standing for extended periods of up to 3-4 hours
to perform repairs and have the ability to stoop, bend, and crouch as required
during maintenance tasks.
