The Service Maintenance Worker III classification is distinguished from the Service Maintenance Worker II by the type of assignment.  The skills and knowledge required are not of a level and scope of a journey trade but may be in support of a journey, trades or crafts person. Automotive equipment operated includes vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver’s License such as a six yard dump truck or packer truck.  Employees in this class work in a trainee capacity where, after demonstrating the necessary knowledge and skills, they may be promoted to entry level skilled positions.

Requires skill to read slightly complex material such as operator manuals, perform simple arithmetic, complete slightly complex forms and use tools and equipment (which may require three to six months to gain proficiency). Demonstrated ability to perform at this level.

Some positions require the use of departmental vehicles on departmental business.  Individuals must be capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.  Some positions may afford the employee the occasional opportunity to operate vehicles which require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).  Employees in these positions who possess a valid CDL and who are willing and able to safely operate a vehicle which requires a CDL, will be paid at the rate of this class regardless of their regular assignment.
