Introduction
The Water and Science Administration, Water Supply Program, Safe Drinking Water Act Implementation Division is recruiting for a Regulatory Compliance Engineer I. This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of the Environment. This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only. The resulting cert list will be maintained for one year. Persons interested in future vacancies within this classification must re-apply.
This is an entry level position; therefore, the selected candidate will be offered the base salary. Progression in the current position will be based upon the approval of annual increments and/or cost of living adjustments.

Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to support the Program’s primacy requirements for implementing the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The incumbent of this position will evaluate treatment adequacy at public water systems; review engineering proposals for capital improvements; meet with public water systems as needed to discuss water quality and treatment needs; review water quality monitoring reports submitted by public water systems; and provide recommendations to assist water systems in correcting water quality problems and/or improving water treatment operations. The incumbent will work with other divisions in the Program to discuss engineering strategies for treatment, and to discuss concerns pertaining to source water quality and availability.
The incumbent of this position will be required to perform site inspections that may involve hiking to remote areas during inclement weather.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or architecture from an accredited college or university.

Notes:
1. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least 20 credits in engineering and two years performing engineering or architectural work in pollution control, waste remediation, resource conservation, environmental protection, public health and safety, or related areas may be substituted for the engineering degree.
2. Professional Engineer or Professional Architect registration in the State of Maryland or in a state with comparable requirements may be substituted for the education requirement.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Engineering and Architecture classifications or Engineering and Architecture specialty codes in the Environmental field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached or carry a cellphone.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Successful candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified and placed on the cert list for at least one year. This list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.
Education credentials and experience verification will be completed by the Appointing Authority. If you are scheduled to complete an education or licensing requirement within six months of the examination, you may participate in the examination process, if one is required. Please note that you will be required by the appointing agency to provide proof upon hire of all certifications, licenses, educational and work experiences.

You must be legally authorized and possess any necessary documents under this Act in order to be hired in the position for which you apply. BARGAINING UNIT STATUS
The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
