Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Fish & Wildlife Health Program, is currently accepting applications for a Seasonal Contractual. The main purpose of this position is: 1) to conduct vector-borne disease surveillance and sampling, 2) to enter data, 3) to summarize trends, 4) to write a summary report, 5) to assist biologists with fieldwork as appropriate, 6) to execute administrative duties as assigned and help to coordinate and conduct fieldwork, 7) to maintain a clean and bio-secure field sites and lab spaces and re-stock sampling kits, 8) ship samples via Fed-Ex to receiving lab.

The position relates to the mission of DNR by contributing to sustainable populations of living resources and habitat within the state of Maryland through the investigation of fish and wildlife population conservation, including threatened and endangered species, and monitoring for health and disease. Experience with blood and other biological sampling of animals is highly recommended. Early morning sampling and long response days are expected. High heat and handling animal waste, animal carcasses are to be expected.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: At least two years of college credits in field of biology, animal sciences, veterinary sciences, natural resources management; coursework in wildlife diseases and zoonotic diseases and disease control.  

Experience: At least one year experience handling birds and other animals, sampling for avian disease, experience entering data and maintaining databases. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

A driver's license, ability to drive, and having own transportation to and from Oxford is required.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
