POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of this position is to maintain the laboratory and carry out various quality assurance procedures. The duties associated with this position are critical in maintaining accreditation of the laboratory.

1.  Performs database duties to include, but not limited to, receipt and processing of DNA database samples, data entry, tracking program updates and expungements 

2.  Cleans and maintains the laboratory on a routine schedule 

3.  Performs and documents reagent preparation as needed 

4.  Monitors and documents performance of equipment on a routine schedule. Maintains applicable Quality Assurance records for the Biology Section 

5.  Coordinates and places orders for supplies and equipment 

6.  Assists the Biology Section with other related assigned duties which may include, but not limited to, inventory and administrative assistance with requests regarding the Public Information Act ("PIA" requests)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university including three courses in chemistry or biology.

Experience: Two years of experience as a Laboratory Assistant or Technician.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in a laboratory applying chemical or biological techniques at a rate of one year of experience for each 30 credit hours of the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of an Associate Arts degree or higher level degree in life or forensic sciences from an accredited college or university for the required education or the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Medical Laboratory or Histopathology classifications or Medical Laboratory specialty codes in the Laboratory Science field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.  Experience cleaning and maintaining a laboratory

2.  Experience with reagent preparation

3.  Experience monitoring and documenting performance of equipment and maintaining Quality Assurance records

4.  Experience placing orders for supplies and equipment and maintaining a supply inventory

5.  Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

Candidates will be subject to an initial drug screening, submission of a DNA sample and a complete criminal background investigation to include a polygraph examination before permanent appointment can be made.  A criminal conviction maybe grounds for rejection of the candidate.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection for this process will involve a review of each application.  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list in the BEST, BETTER or QUALIFIED category.  The list will be used by the hiring manager to select the individual to fill the vacancy.  The list will be valid for one year.
