POSITION DUTIES

This position is located within the Business Tax Audit Section in the Compliance Division. The main purpose of this position is to supervise a group of field auditors who are assigned the task of auditing businesses for proper collection and remittance of Alcohol and Tobacco Taxes. The incumbent provides direction and reviews audits completed by the audit staff, for adherence to established audit standards and procedures. Also, assists audit personnel on a daily basis in the performance of their duties. This is done to maintain efficiency and adherence to agency goals and policies, utilizing established agency policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Eight years of experience, four years of experience performing revenue field auditing or outside tax auditing and an additional four years of experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles or professional auditing experience.

NOTES:

  1. Candidates may substitute an additional two years of experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles or professional auditing experience for one of the four years of experience performing revenue field auditing or outside tax auditing.
  2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a successful completion certificate from the Comptroller Business Management Certificate Program for the four years of experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles or professional auditing.
  3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate for five years of the required experience.
  4. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with six credit hours in accounting and fifteen credit hours in related courses (e.g., business finance, economics, business administration, information technology) and four years of experience performing revenue field auditing or outside tax auditing for the required experience.
  5. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university for five years of the required experience.
  6. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in accounting and budget classification or accounting and budget specialty codes in the auditing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

  1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. 
  2. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Only applicants who meet the minimum and selective qualifications for this recruitment will be considered for this opportunity. Due to the nature of this list, all qualified applicants are placed on an unranked list of candidates and will remain active on this list for at least one year.

Qualifying applicants are subject to an oral interview. Prior to appointment, the employee must successfully undergo a comprehensive background investigation including a review of criminal, MVA and tax records; and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States or under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. This background check is comprehensive and may involve fingerprinting. Upon initial appointment OR promotion to a position in the State Personnel Management System, an employee is required to serve an initial six- month probationary period. This probationary period may be extended an additional six months under certain circumstances at the discretion of the appointing authority.
