Main Purpose of Job

This position will serve as an Epidemiologist for the Maryland Department of Health (MDH)'s Prevention and Health Promotion Administration (PHPA)'s Environmental Health Bureau (EHB)'s Center for Environmental, Occupational and Injury Epidemiology. This position will be responsible for applying epidemiological knowledge, skills and abilities to the implementation of a broad portfolio of Bureau services, programs, policies, and grants, with emphasis on projects and activities within Maryland's Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) Program, along with Occupational Illness and Injury Epidemiology.

This position will provide support for activities which involve exposure assessment, as well as exposure-dose relationships, in the occupational and environmental setting. This position will collect and analyze data with the usage of SAS statistical analysis software. This position will also summarize findings and interpret data for both professional and lay audiences. 

In addition, this position will prepare data products and visualizations, while disseminating epidemiologic findings to support public health actions. Finally, this position will work across environmental, occupational, and injury health topics, while assisting the EHB with emerging issues and participating in emergency response. 

As this position is a Critical Data Analyst position in the EHB that will provide data to support decision-making, as well as to respond to requests for data from both health departments and community stakeholders, the ability to use SAS statistical analysis software, along with excellent communication skills, is critical.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university, with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics.

Experience: None.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a Commissioned Officer in Health Care Science classifications, or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists or Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work, on a year-for-year basis, for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have professional experience with Environmental and/or Occupational Epidemiology, as well as experience managing and analyzing large epidemiological data sets.
