Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust is the state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past. Through research, conservation and education, the Maryland Historical Trust assists the people of Maryland in understanding their historical and cultural heritage. Part of the Maryland Department of Planning, the Maryland Historical Trust serves as Maryland’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.  This is a full-time one-year contractual position

Main Purpose of Job

The purpose of the position is to organize and digitize information on existing and new architectural survey forms in the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties, as part of a collaborative project aimed at enhancing the searchable database and simultaneously identifying data gaps that can be filled by future survey work. Strong computer skills are required.

POSITION DUTIES


Job duties will include a comprehensive review of the existing 45,000 architectural records in the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties and interpreting and entering information from the paper forms into a searchable database. This database powers Medusa, the state’s Cultural Resource Information System.

The review will involve manually reading and interpreting each paper form and entering the information from 10-12 fields into the database. In some cases, this will involve simple transcription, in other cases it will require interpretation of the contents of longer text fields and translation into the categories in the database.

This job requires extreme attention to detail, excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills and a strong interest in working collaboratively.  Computer proficiency and demonstrated interpretive skills are essential.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Anthropology, History, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, or other closely related field.

 

Experience:  Two years of professional experience and/or preservation internships in one of the above fields. Proficiency with databases and with computerized file management is required. 

Notes: 

  1. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-to-year basis for the required general experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with cultural resources of the Middle Atlantic region.
