This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Services. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to serve as the expert in determining the status and conservation needs of the state’s nongame insects, including rare, threatened, and endangered species and unique or ecologically significant insect communities. The position requires the design and implementation of inventory, monitoring, and research activities; the statistical analysis of quantitative field data; serving as the lead in state-wide and regional insect conservation projects; the development and implementation of strategies for insects and insect community conservation planning, restoration, and resource protection; and the synthesis of data to assign conservation ranks and state legal status. This position also provides technical assistance to the public, Natural Heritage Program, WHS, other units within the Department, and other state and federal agencies and nongovernmental organizations in such activities as the development of conservation plans, habitat protection, ecological restoration, land management and stewardship, environmental review, and public education. The position serves as the lead on statewide and multi-state projects and working groups for the purposes of species and habitat management and protection for insects.
POSITION DUTIES
The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service’s Natural Heritage Program, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Biologist V. This position serves as the Department’s expert in determining the status and conservation needs of the state’s nongame insects, including rare, threatened, and endangered species and unique or ecologically significant insect communities. The position requires a wide breadth and depth of knowledge of the state’s insect fauna, their life histories and ecology; the synthesis of large volumes of information across a wide range of insect taxa in order to identify and prioritize insect biodiversity conservation needs at the species, community, habitat and ecosystem levels; the design and implementation of timely inventory, monitoring, and research activities to better inform insect conservation needs and priorities; the statistical analysis of quantitative field data; the development and implementation of strategies for insects and insect community conservation planning, restoration, and protection; working with a variety of professional and amateur entomologists, ecologists and natural history groups and organizations; and the synthesis of data to assign species conservation ranks and propose state legal statuses. The position is responsible for leading statewide and multi-state projects and working groups for the purposes of species and habitat management and protection for insects. This position also provides technical assistance to the public, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, other state and federal agencies and nongovernmental organizations in such activities as the development of conservation plans, habitat protection, ecological restoration, land management and stewardship, environmental review, and public education. This work requires familiarity with Maryland’s insect species and their habitats, environmental threats, and planning to conserve priority species and the natural communities and ecosystems that support them. Familiarity with habitat management and restoration techniques will be essential to fulfill this mission. Work will require occasional long field days with varied weather conditions and biting insects. The incumbent will supervise volunteers and seasonal employees within the program and will work with a variety of partner organizations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology and six years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.

1. Candidates
may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental
aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine
biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries
management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management
related field of study from an accredited college or university and six years
of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of
natural resources management for the required experience.

Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from an
accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study
as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credit hours for one year
of experience for up to two years of the required experience.
3. Candidates
may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned
officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences
classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences
specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis
for the required experience.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
Four years of professional experience conducting conservation-oriented field studies of insects.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in entomology, conservation biology, or one of the closely related fields listed under the minimum qualifications education requirement on this job bulletin.
- At least four years of experience collecting and analyzing field-based research and monitoring data for insects of conservation concern, including use of ArcGIS and statistical packages, and disseminating results through oral presentations, reports, or other publications.
- At least two years of experience with developing and implementing conservation plans, habitat management or restoration plans, or other projects to benefit insect species of conservation concern.
- Experience managing multiple priorities and supervising staff or volunteers.
- Successful work with partners on insect conservation projects and communication with the public about insect or habitat conservation.
- Specialized training for application of prescribed fire, herbicides, mechanical control of vegetation, or other techniques for habitat management and restoration.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
