Main Purpose of Job

To act as coordinator, team leader and mentor for AmeriCorps Maryland Conservation Corps members performing park improvements, environmental education, interpretive programs, and conservation projects to enhance and protect Maryland’s natural resources and develop principles of stewardship of our public lands. To develop and implement programs, projects, and interpretive services to enhance the experience of visitors to Maryland State Parks.

POSITION DUTIES

Incumbents will be responsible for working with and coordinating the work schedules and work assignments of a crew of four to six Conservation Corps members based out of Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, Susquehanna, Tuckahoe, Deep Creek Lake, Assateague, Patapsco Valley, Gunpowder Falls and Washington Monument State Parks. The Crew Leader will report directly to and provide assistance to the assigned Park Ranger for the Maryland Conservation Corps (MCC). The Crew Leader provides advice, guidance and direction pertaining to work responsibilities, education and job training. The Crew Leader may be asked to make recommendations about work projects, project implementation techniques, education components, jobs skills training, and life skills training. The Crew Leader will meet with the Park Ranger, Park Manager and MCC headquarters staff in regard to the welfare of the crew and individual corps members. In the Park Ranger’s absence, the Crew Leader will be responsible for public relations and the service component of the program within the community. Travel around the state will be necessary for projects and trainings, and there will be mandatory overnight trips for up to a week at a time. These positions will be responsible for assisting with the following functions: payroll forms, weekly reports, personnel reports, monthly calendar schedules, quarterly reports, tool inventory and vehicle forms.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Lead and serve as a role model to a crew of four to six young adults 17-25 years of age.
  • Accept responsibility for any assigned equipment and vehicles.· Plan and implement daily schedules.
  • Teach job and life skills to corps members.
  • Coordinate community service projects with corps members and community leaders.
  • Submit weekly timecards, progress reports, statistics and other paperwork as required.
  • Speak to the public, community groups, school groups, organizations, and the media to plan, develop and deliver programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Five years of experience, one year of experience in forest or park management, recreation, or natural resources management, or preparing, developing or delivering programs that interpret natural, historical, cultural or recreational features and an additional four years of experience in park management, recreation or a natural or cultural resources related field.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the field of park operations, recreation, education, business administration, forestry, social sciences, history or a natural resources or history related field and one year of experience in forest or park management, recreation, or natural resources management, or preparing, developing or delivering programs that interpret natural, historical, cultural or recreational features for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of     park management, recreation, education, business administration, forestry, social sciences or a natural resources related field for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in management and program clerical and assistance classification or management and program clerical and assistance specialty codes in the general, administrative, clerical, and office services field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working within a national, state, county or local park.
  • Experience working as part of an AmeriCorps program.
  • Experience working with service or campus organizations.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
