Introduction

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is seeking to hire a full time Curator for the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM). Located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland, JPPM is home to over 65 archaeological sites, more than 30 historic buildings and structures, and the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. JPPM supports the preservation of Maryland's cultural resources and connects people to the past through the preservation and interpretation of our onsite historical and archaeological resources.  www.jefpat.org

Main Purpose of Job

The JPPM Curator manages and oversees the Jefferson Patterson Park’s Agricultural and Historical Collection, the Jefferson and Mary Marvin Patterson Collection, and the Louis L. Goldstein Collection, ensuring proper maintenance and care for the collections. The JPPM Curator will coordinate with other departments at JPPM to make these collections accessible to the public through exhibits, tours, and programs. The JPPM Curator helps MDP and JPPM fulfill their mission of protecting the State’s cultural heritage by preserving the artifacts that represent that heritage and making them accessible to the State’s citizens

POSITION DUTIES

Responsible for curation of Patterson House and the Jefferson and Mary Marvin Patterson Collection, JPPM Agricultural and Historical Collection, and the Goldstein Collection, in keeping with the Maryland Historical Trust General Collections Policy and the Trust Agreement.

Maintains and archives records, inventory, and photographs. Oversees treatment, storage, and conservation of objects. Ensures that the collection supports the JPPM mission and interpretive master plan; accessions and deaccessions objects as necessary. Justifies and expends funds for maintenance of collections. Maintains and archives object related records, including but not limited to accession, deaccession, and gift /acquisition records. Maintains records of, and monitors / tracks, loans, and public / researcher access. Maintains Patterson Family and other Archives. Conducts research in the Jefferson and Mary Marvin Patterson Collection and other Collections, including the buildings and grounds, and other sources as needed, to advise on restoration and interpretation of the site. 

Provides curatorial administration. Supports JPPM Executive Director and MHT Director in fulfilling their roles and authorities under the MHT General Collections Policy. Ensures the long-term preservation of collections and associated records and data. Participates in MHT Collections Committee meetings. Prepares conservation work requests as needed. Coordinates and leads basic cleaning of collections and collections storage areas. Writes administrative reports, brochures, and in-house documents as needed. Supervises volunteers who assist with the JPPM collections. Provides information to other JPPM staff about objects in the JPPM collections that could support educational and interpretive programming. Works collaboratively with other JPPM staff on exhibits that utilize objects in the JPPM collections. Works on other special projects and opportunities as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for- year basis for the required experience.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Limited to current and contractual employees of the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
