Introduction

The Maryland Department of Labor is accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Administrative Officer I. This skilled position serves as the Administrative Officer I for the Department of Labor. Administrative Officer I is administrative work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans or policies.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to provide administrative support for the executive director, and the members of the Board of Public Accountancy (appointed by the Governor). The administrative duties require: independent judgement and actions concerning applications for licensing, and candidacy for the Uniform CPA Examination; communication and customers services between the Board and licensees, license and examination applicants and the general publics of the Board. The job responsibility of this position is essential to the mission of the Board for the accurate, timely, and efficient processing of license and examination applications and other administrative operations of the Board.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties of this position include but are not limited to:
  • Manages the application/reapplication process for applicants for licensure; maintaining licensing files for 19,500 licensees. Evaluates the educational, examination, and experience credentials of applicants and makes technical decisions based upon the authority conferred by the Board, the Maryland Public Accountancy Act and Board regulations as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Maintains customer relations between the Board and; 1) licensee regarding license renewal requirements, (i.e., continuing education, pee review, etc.); and provides essential Board-generated documents to assist licensees in obtaining licensure in other states; 2) assists Marylanders and individuals licensed in other states in understanding the educational, experience, and examination requirements for licensure in Maryland.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

5 years of administrative experience
Knowledge of the Maryland Board of Public Accountants
Experience with AS400

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (Department of Labor/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to Department of Labor/DUI as a result of unemployment overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment.
