Main Purpose of Job

This position is a sub-professional technical work at the experienced level in the field of surveying. It works with survey team using surveying equipment and is responsible for the accurate placement of regulatory and navigation buoys on a highly technical, multifaceted and state of the art buoy tending/ice breaking operation for Boating Services. This position supervises the structural/cosmetic repairs/upgrades and is responsible for commanding vessels involved in buoy operations. The program is vital to a variety of state regulatory, research and restoration programs within Maryland’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Fishing and Boating Services located at 800 Norris Harbor Drive, Crisfield MD 21817 is currently accepting applications for a Hydrographic Engineering Associate III. This position is a sub-professional technical work at the experienced level in the field of surveying. It works with a survey team using surveying equipment and is responsible for the accurate placement of regulatory and navigation buoys on a 80’ Buoy Tender/Debris vessel. This position supervises the structural/cosmetic repairs/upgrades and is responsible for commanding small vessels involved in buoy operations. The program is vital to a variety of state regulatory, research and restoration programs within Maryland’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate including at least four courses in mathematics and/or science.

Experience: Two years of experience performing full performance level Hydrographic Engineering Associate work in the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.  

                                                             OR

Experience: Seven years of experience involving any combination of hydrography, engineering, surveying, or construction inspection work including two years of experience in hydrographic engineering associated activities.


Notes: 

1. Candidates may substitute credit hours in the field of engineering, geology, physics, oceanography, mathematics (excluding basic, required courses) from an accredited college or university at the rate of 15 credit hours for one year, up to a maximum of two years of required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Civil Engineering classifications or Civil Engineering or Quarrying Specialist specialty codes in the hydrographic engineering field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year experience using vessels equipped with hydraulic cranes and hand operated winches & knowledge of setting and retrieving regulatory buoys to mark zones. 
  • One year experience in the safe operation of hand and power tools.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year experience in steel hull vessel maintenance. 
  • Experience operating and maintaining a state vessel, vehicle and trailer.
  • Experience with computer programs such as ESRI ArcGIS, Arc Map, Visual CAD, Expert GPS, Garmin, or other GIS software. 
  • Possession of a USCG Captains License.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

This position may be asked to operate commercial vehicles including vehicles pulling trailers pulling state vessels. A class “C” driver’s license is strongly preferred.
This position may also be assigned duties that will also utilize a USCG Captains License. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Some positions in this classification are assigned duties, which will require the individual to be examined by a physician. After an offer of employment, applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.
