Main Purpose of Job

The IT Assistant Director I (Network Engineer) will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining our Amazon Web Service (AWS) cloud network infrastructure. Will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the performance, security, and reliability of our cloud-based systems.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Design, implement, and maintain highly available and scalable AWS network architectures to support the company's cloud services.
  • Implement and manage security best practices, including network access control, firewalls, VPNs, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Continuously monitor network performance and proactively optimize AWS network resources for cost-efficiency and reliability.
  • Diagnose and resolve network issues, including latency, packet loss, and connectivity problems, to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including DevOps, Security, and Infrastructure, to align network solutions with business requirements.
  • Maintain comprehensive network documentation, including diagrams, configurations, and procedures.
  • Implement automation scripts and tools to streamline network provisioning and management tasks.
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery plans and ensure network resilience in case of system failures or outages.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field of study to include coursework in database management systems.  

or 

Experience: Five years of experience designing and implementing complex data communications or telecommunications networks.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect or AWS Certified Network Specialty certification is preferred.
  • One year In-depth knowledge of AWS networking services, including VPC, Direct Connect, Route 53, and Transit Gateway.
  • One year Proficiency in scripting and automation using tools like Python, AWS CloudFormation, or Terraform.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

 

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
