Main Purpose of Job

The Environmental Health Specialist Director directs the Environmental Health Program for Talbot County Health Department and is responsible for general oversight and management of the Program. This position is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, directing, coordinating and prioritizing activities of all Environmental Health programs at Talbot County Health Department. This includes related budget tracking, activity reporting, and oversight of public health programs (including Food Safety, Well & Septic, Public Pools, Rabies Prevention, etc) through subordinate supervisors and staff to ensure compliance with environmental health laws, regulations and policies. The Director of Environmental Health provides consultation to the public and regulated industry on processes, testing, permits, technologies, licensing, and complaints. This position involves both administrative and technical responsibilities and capabilities concerning a wide variety of fundamental environmental programs and related topics. Reporting directly to the Health Officer, the Director of Environmental Health interacts with elected officials and advises the Health Officer as appropriate. This position is designated emergency essential, and requires some work on evenings and weekends while on-call.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must possess a bachelor's degree in biological, physical, environmental science or chemistry, and six years of experience involving inspections and investigations in the field of environmental health or closely related environmental health experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity.

A master's degree in Public Health or Environmental Health Science can substitute for one-year non-supervisory experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess the following:
- Familiarity with State of Maryland Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR)
- Experience with Environmental Health Laws
- Experience managing budgets and grants 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license or be eligible to obtain licensure as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists. A copy of your license number and expiration date must accompany your application.

This is a Management Service position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority. A resume must accompany your application.
