POSITION DUTIES

As a member of the Office of the Comptroller’s Executive Team, the Director of Media Relations role will work in close collaboration with the Director of Strategic Communications, the agency’s senior and executive leaders, and other state agencies and partners to: (1) develop and execute a media engagement strategy that explains & elevates the Office of the Comptroller, (2) leads and supervises media planning and engagement, (3) works with the media to educate the public about the resources and services provided by the agency, (4) improves external communications and information-sharing with Marylanders and external stakeholders, and (5) promotes the agency’s key strategic initiatives with the media and other external stakeholders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelors' degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field. 

Experience: Five years of progressive experience in a communications role.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience in creating and implementing communications strategies, plans, and campaigns.
  • Previous experience working in government communications.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional background that includes serving in the capacity of Public Information Officer. 
  • History of successful media relationship. 
  • Excellent copy editing, briefing, and media pitching skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill with building and managing media relationships.
  • Proficiency in identifying and analyzing emerging issues.
  • Professional success with developing and executing effective strategic communications plans, responses, statements, briefings, copy, press events, and materials. 
  • Experience creating and negotiating media engagement and media buying opportunities.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Qualifying applicants are subject to an oral interview. Prior to appointment, the employee must successfully undergo a comprehensive background investigation including a review of criminal, MVA and tax records; and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States or under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. This background check is comprehensive and may involve fingerprinting. Upon initial appointment OR promotion to a position in the State Personnel Management System, an employee is required to serve an initial six- month probationary period. This probationary period may be extended an additional six months under certain circumstances at the discretion of the appointing authority.
