POSITION DUTIES
The main purpose of the Computer Operator I position is to provide the primary information technology support for the Board of Public Works, including implementation of Information Security policies, standards, and procedures.
Support includes providing evaluation, design, development, implementation and maintenance oversight to the operation of computer systems and providing technical assistance to BPW staff, Specific responsibilities include:
- Provide support, assisting with troubleshooting and resolving issues with common desktop technology and software.
- Facilitate the ability of office personnel to telework.
- Plan, direct and administer the computer operations activity of the Board of Public Works, including developing, implementing, and managing new and revised computer operations policies and procedures with a focus on cyber security.
- Implement, manage, and administer a system allowing members of the public to electronically submit public comments on meeting agenda items.
- Facilitate the ability of the Board of Public Works to hold hybrid or fully virtual meetings.
- Manage special projects as assigned. Examples include modernizing Board of Public Works meeting agenda information presentation and modifying the Board of Public Works website.
- May manage data communications, data entry and other related functions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Two years of experience supervising operators of multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems.
Notes:
- Candidates may substitute additional experience operating computer equipment for the purpose of data entry, word processing or maintaining information on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience as non-commissioned/enlisted personnel in an Information Technology field on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in Computer System Operations classifications or Computer System Operations specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

- Skills to build and manage an organization’s website
- Knowledge of the function-and capabilities of multi-purpose, multi-tasking computers and peripheral equipment;
- Knowledge of computer operating systems and the commands necessary to operate multipurpose, multi-tasking computers;
- Knowledge of job streaming and multi-tasking concepts;
- Knowledge of emergency, disaster recovery and security procedures related to computer operations;
- Skill in preparing statistical and narrative reports of computer operations;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with and communicate technical information to users, vendors, programmers and technical support staff.

Qualifying applicants are subject to an oral interview. Prior to appointment, the employee must successfully undergo a comprehensive background investigation including a review of criminal, MVA and tax records; and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States or under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. This background check is comprehensive and may involve fingerprinting. Upon initial appointment OR promotion to a position in the State Personnel Management System, an employee is required to serve an initial six- month probationary period. This probationary period may be extended an additional six months under certain circumstances at the discretion of the appointing authority.
