Introduction

The Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council (Council), a dynamic, statewide policy and advocacy organization, is hiring a Director of Engagement. The Council works to create change to make it possible for people with developmental disabilities to live the lives they want with the support they need. The Director of Engagement will join a small staff and work with a 30-member council and other partners to help advance the organization’s mission and improve communications and engagement. Main Purpose of Job

As an expert in meaningful communication and engagement strategies, the Director of Engagement leads, coordinates, and participates in various initiatives of the Council to develop, improve, or expand accessible communication across multiple platforms and for multiple audiences. The primary audience of the Council includes people with developmental disabilities, families of people with developmental disabilities, leaders in federal and state government, and other community partners that further the Council’s mission. In collaboration with Council staff, the Director of Engagement has responsibility for developing and implementing accessible communication strategies to strengthen the engagement of Council members, people with disabilities, families, and other stakeholders to achieve outcomes in multiple priority areas as established under the Council’s 5-year State Plan.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Develops and implements a communications plan that aligns with the Council’s mission, 5-year state plan priorities, and advocacy and policy work.
  • Collaborates with the executive director, deputy director, and staff to write and design newsletters, annual reports, policy briefs, and fact sheets.
  • Develops and maintains consistent messaging while creating and editing content to ensure accessibility (i.e., plain language, easy to read, translated languages, large print, alt. text, etc.).
  • Upholds image standards and acts as quality control for correspondence, communications, and public facing documents; edits materials for correct grammar and syntax as needed.
  • Serves as editor-in-chief and designer, contributes content, and coordinates content from other staff across Council communication channels. Periodically interviews external sources and writes stories. Periodically supports listening sessions, webinars, surveys, or community events to identify the best strategies for Council communication.
  • Supports research on topics for Council communications, reports, and to support advocacy work of other staff.  
  • Develops strategies to improve engagement of Council members, people with developmental disabilities, families, and other stakeholders with the Council’s activities and mission.
  • Leads ongoing assessment of the Council’s communications and executes strategies to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Identifies new and creative ways to enhance written and visual content, expand audiences, and coordinate strategies with other Council activities. The audiences for Council communications include people with developmental disabilities and their families, advocates, state and federal government officials, legislators, service providers, and the public.
  • Track and report on Council communications to the deputy director.
  • Manages and develops content for all aspects of external communications including, but not limited to, the Council’s website, social media pages, annual report, monthly newsletter, and announcements.
  • Works with contracted graphic designer on annual report and special publications.
  • Assists with the development of the Council’s 5-year State Plan.
  • Coordinates and works with the director of grant management and reporting to complete the Council’s annual federal performance report; contributes content and coordinates input from other staff. Acts as  the editor to maintain consistent messaging. Provides leadership and support to special initiatives and events.
  • Supports executive and deputy directors with news media and public speaking obligations as needed.
  • Staffs the Council’s Membership Committee, conducts new member orientation, and oversees member support and engagement.
  • Manages special projects, such as photo contests and public awareness campaigns.
  • The Director of Engagement works closely and collaboratively with a small staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree with a major in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, English, or related field.

Experience: 4 years of administrative or professional experience. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experience and knowledge in the developmental disabilities field
2. Experience in the drafting, editing, and proofing of documentation
3. Experience in public relations and/or communication strategies 
4. Supervisory experience
5. Knowledge of plain language principles
