The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners.

We are currently accepting applications to create a pool of qualified individuals who can work on an as needed basis to temporarily continue the lessons planned for the children on any given day.

Main Purpose of Job

Substitute teaching assignments may change based on the needs of the school. A substitute teacher may be asked to accept assignments outside his/her background or educational training. They may also be asked to cover classes during a planning period. It is not expected that a substitute teacher be able to teach new or unfamiliar materials, but rather make every attempt to follow the lesson plan and manage student behavior in the most positive way possible.

POSITION DUTIES

Follow the lesson plan left by the teacher and ensure students complete all assigned tasks, maintain a safe environment, keep students under direct supervision at all times, leave information concerning the day's activities for the teacher, and maintain strict confidentiality of students and school personnel information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree required.  Fluency in American Sign Language and written English required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working with a diverse student population including underserved students, strong classroom management skills, and knowledge of the Deaf Community preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
