Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners.  As such, we are looking for dedicated individuals who can join us in the education of the children at MSD.

Main Purpose of Job

To provide post-secondary transition education services for students who are 18-21 years old, who have completed at least four years of comprehensive high school, who are eligible for alternative framework instruction, and who demonstrate the potential for competitive employment upon completion of the program.

POSITION DUTIES

The Orioles Career Academy (OCA) teacher provides comprehensive and specialized instructions to students in the Orioles Career Academy Program.

  • Instruction should be provided in all settings, such as the classroom, community, and job sites.
  • Provide students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth as identified in their IEP.
  • Develop or modify curricula and prepares lessons and other instructional materials according to students' ability levels; and provide differentiated instruction as appropriate.
  • Communicate frequently with parents/guardians, administrators, all other colleagues, and stakeholders to collaborate effectively.
  • Seek input on educational planning and implementation.
  • Design, revise, and maintain a class schedule consisting of content in the community living domains and functional academics.
  • Network with all appropriate community agencies and organizations.
  • Attend IEP meetings in the role of transition teacher,
  • Ensure each student's IEP is written and appropriately developed in accordance with MSDE expectations, including transition activities and outcomes.
  • Develop lessons and activities to implement instruction in all transition service areas needed for students in the OCA program, with consideration for each of their disability areas.
  • Coordinate the teaching of daily living skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelor's degree is required in Education, Special Education and/or Vocational Rehabilitation.

Candidates must be eligible to apply for or be willing to obtain certification by the Maryland State Department of Education within a prescribed amount of time. Fluency in American Sign Language and written English are required.  Knowledge of the Deaf culture, Deaf Education, students with additional disabilities, and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational and language acquisition backgrounds is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense. (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
