POSITION DUTIES

​​This recruitment is for one current vacancy for the Hearings and Appeals Division located in Baltimore. The Senior Tax Attorney I will conduct administrative hearings with taxpayers and their representatives to determine accuracy and legal validity of tax assessments and refund denials issued by the Comptroller's office. The Senior Tax Attorney I will be responsible for resolution of appeals by requesting adjustments to tax assessments or refund denials, negotiation of settlement agreements, and issuing notices of final determination to the taxpayer. The incumbent will respond to taxpayers and their representatives to resolve questions regarding appeal procedures and the application of federal and Maryland tax law to specific situations.​

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Juris Doctor or equivalent degree from an accredited school of law.

NOTE:

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in judge advocate classification or judge advocate specialty codes in the tax law specialist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

** For education obtained outside of the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. If you possess a degree obtained outside of the United States, please submit a detailed, course-by-course evaluation report from one of the U.S. equivalency evaluating members identified at http://www.naces.org/members.html.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

  1. Admission to the Bar of a US State or Territory or the District of Columbia.
  2. Admission to the Maryland Bar within six (6) months of employment.
  3. Certificate of Good Standing from the Maryland Court of Appeals upon admission to the Maryland Bar.
  4. Employees appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

Qualifying applicants are subject to an oral interview. Prior to appointment, the employee must successfully undergo a comprehensive background check that will include fingerprinting, tax obligation, and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States.
