Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

To manage the functions of the Coastal and Environmental Geology Program to providescientifically credible data and interpretations which can, in turn, be utilized for technicallysound management and regulatory actions to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural resourcesof the State. The main efforts of study for the Coastal Program include sediment mappingthrough remote sensing (multibeam bathymetry, sidescan sonar, shallow seismic), shorelineerosion using integrated GIS analysis, geomorphology, sediment geochemistry, traditionalgeologic mapping, geohazard mapping, and critical mineral mapping. A majority of these projects are funded through grants and the manager will be responsible for developing and continuing finding funds for these programs.

This position performs other duties that are assigned to complete all tasks associated with this job’s functions.

POSITION DUTIES

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Geological Survey, is currently accepting applications for a Coastal and Environmental Geology Program Chief. This position is located at the Maryland Geological Survey at 2300 St. Paul Street, Baltimore, Maryland, but has responsibilities for the entire state of Maryland. The selected candidate will serve as the leader and supervisor of a thirteen-person team focusing on geologic mapping, geohazard mapping, critical minerals, marine geologic mapping, sediment quality and quantity, geomorphology, and shoreline erosion.

The Program Chief will be responsible for the team development, resource allocation, contractual obligations, fiscal stability, and scientific direction of the Coastal and Environmental Geology program. The program is very dynamic andvery diverse in their current portfolio of projects. Working with the General Direction program, Hydrogeology program, and with other Department of Natural Resources programs is required. 

This position works with many other governmental, academic, and non-governmental organizations building stakeholder groups and consensus within projects and study areas. 

This position may work long hours and weekend hours in the field collecting data and supervising the collection of data. Fieldwork is conducted year-round from large boats, small boats, and by walking. A valid driver’s license and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. is required to complete field duties. 

Teleworking is permitted according to the policy and procedures of supervisory organizations after the probationary period is met and with supervisor approval.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology, or a related earth science.

Experience: A minimum of 10 years overall of Geological field experience; a minimum 5 years of marine geology experience and a minimum of 5 years of geologic map production experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Supervision of geologic scientific teams
  • Experience with grant funding, contracts, and soft money obtainment
  • Experience with bathymetric, sidescan sonar, gps surveying, and digital map production
  • Experience with StateMap program with USGS
  • Possession of MD Safe Boating License or equivalent
  • Experience with budgeting, invoicing, and contracts supporting a field program

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
